National First-Class Artist Huang Zhongmin: Bringing Millennia-Old Paper-Cutting from Tradition to Contemporary Life

In an era where digital production dominates, one artist is proving that the human hand still holds irreplaceable power. Huang Zhongmin, a National First-Class Artist and inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of paper-cutting, is on a mission to bridge millennia-old tradition with contemporary living—one delicate cut at a time.

A Lifetime Devoted to the Blade

Huang's journey with paper and scissors began early. Born into a family of paper-cutting artisans, he started learning the craft at the age of six, immersed from childhood in the rhythms and rituals of this ancient Chinese folk art. Over the decades, he has honed his skills to the level of a National First-Class Artist—the highest professional title in China's fine arts series, equivalent to a senior professional position-. This distinction is reserved for artists with profound cultural and artistic cultivation, extensive professional knowledge, and a distinctive personal artistic style.

Huang's work reflects a deep understanding of both tradition and innovation. His creations span landscapes, folk customs, and contemporary scenes, demonstrating how paper-cutting can evolve beyond its historical roots to capture the spirit of modern life. He has held over fifty solo exhibitions and received multiple national-level awards, earning recognition not only in China but also among international audiences.

From Tradition to Contemporary Life

What sets Huang apart is his ability to reimagine paper-cutting for today's world. While traditional paper-cuttings often depicted folklore and auspicious symbols, Huang has expanded the medium's vocabulary to include modern narratives—urban landscapes, everyday life, and even contemporary cultural themes.

His signature "Rong School" paper-cutting technique, which he developed over years of practice, blends the delicate, intricate style of southern Chinese paper-cutting with the bold, rustic character of northern traditions. The result is a distinctive aesthetic that preserves the essence of Eastern artistry while appealing to contemporary tastes in home décor, cultural gifting, and art collection.

A New Chapter: Jiangxi Zhongmin Trading Co., Ltd.

In August 2025, Huang took a significant step toward his vision of cultural revitalization by founding Jiangxi Zhongmin Trading Co., Ltd. The company is dedicated to the commercialization of intangible cultural heritage paper-cutting, with a clear mission: "to pass on traditional craftsmanship and revitalize cultural value."

The company adheres to a strict "100% handmade" standard. Each paper-cut artwork undergoes four major processes—design, paper selection, cutting and carving, and mounting—comprising over a dozen detailed steps. With millimeter-level precision and handcrafted framing techniques, every piece achieves a delicate texture and artistic tension that machine-made products cannot replicate.

This commitment to quality has positioned the company as a model for the successful commercialization of intangible cultural heritage. By making paper-cutting accessible as home décor, cultural gifts, and collectible art, Huang is achieving what he calls "activating art through the market, and preserving culture through art."

A Cultural Ambassador

Huang's influence extends beyond his own creations. He serves as Vice President of the Guangzhou Paper-Cutting Association, a guest professor at Guangzhou Light Industry Technician College, and founder of the Lingnan Rong School of Paper-Cutting. He has been invited to teach and demonstrate his craft at numerous cultural exchange events, introducing international audiences to the beauty and intricacy of Chinese paper-cutting. His work Guangzhou Legend has even been selected as a diplomatic gift for international occasions.

Looking Ahead

As Jiangxi Zhongmin Trading Co., Ltd. continues to grow, Huang Zhongmin remains focused on his core belief: that traditional crafts must evolve to survive. By merging artistic excellence with commercial viability, he is ensuring that the ancient art of paper-cutting not only endures but thrives in the contemporary world.

For Huang, each cut tells a story—not just of the image it creates, but of a culture that refuses to be forgotten. In his hands, paper becomes more than art; it becomes a living legacy.
